Paradise Point/St. Thomas Skyride
Alas, Island Girl has still not found the man of her dreams. A few nightmares, yes. A passing fancy or two, for sure. But the future Mr. Island Girl is still out there, somewhere. But when I do finally find him, Paradise Point is definitely on the list of places I would consider tying the knot. Not only is it stunningly beautiful up there, but they also serve wicked-good Bushwhackers and have trained a small troupe of exotic birds to ride around on bicycles, both of which would be a huge bonus at an Island Girl wedding…to say nothing of the actual wedding gazebo the nice folks at Paradise Point have built and designated specifically for that purpose. But until that happy day arrives, Paradise Point is still a fun place that’s well worth the visit. In fact, when family and friends come down to see me it’s usually the first place I take them. Even for us locals the view is simply spectacular, but for first-timers it’s a must-see attraction. The five or ten minute gondola ride 700 feet up the side of Signal Hill (which is every bit a mountain if you ask me) qualifies as at least a mini-thrill, and provides excellent photo ops for those who just can’t wait to get to the top. And once you’ve arrived, well, you can shop, eat, drink, or take pictures. After all, that and the sun and sea are what you come to St. Thomas for, right? In addition to the usual fare of t-shirts and souvenirs and such, there are also a few hidden gems, including one shop where you can buy authenticated ancient coins from sunken ships. And for the slightly more adventurous, Paradise Point stays open late on Wednesday’s during season. There is live music and, if you’re lucky, one of the most stunning sunsets you may ever see. Oh, and there’s also a nature trail – a quarter-mile loop that takes you a little further up the hill. Don’t attempt this in flip-flops, sandals, or after you’ve had a bushwhacker or two, ok?
