Ask Senators who are Railing Against Diageo, ‘What Have You Done for Me Lately’

July 9, 2008 – Once again we run the risk of losing a business deal that would be good for the territory because some among us need to grandstand at the expense of the rest of us.
We must pray that our abusive senators will not drive yet another company that wants to do business here away with their insults and intimidating swaggering.
While Diageo PLC, arguably the world's largest liquor producer, stands to make a lot of money by producing its Captain Morgan rum on St. Croix given the benefits the company stands to receive, so do we.
That’s how business works.
But if they don’t produce their rum here, they will still make money.
But we won’t.
How very sad that we are at the mercy of such men, none of whom have ever cut such a deal for us. None of whom have ever brought such revenues to the people.
I hope the voters will take a look at the track record of those who are shouting most loudly against St. Croix and the Virgin Islands netting $100 million a year, with lots of guarantees should that not happen, and ask – "what have you done for me lately."
