Banco Popular Presents Savings Accounts to MATHCOUNT Winners

Feb. 27, 2009 – Four school students: Taylor Ladd, Jordan Ladd, Shallum Alfred and Maddie Russel won the final round of the Department of Education St. Thomas-St. John MATHCOUNTS district finals.
The competition was held at the Palms Court Harbourview Hotel in the chapter competition of the national MATHCOUNTS program. Thirteen schools and 90 "mathaletes" competed. The schools represented were: All Saints, Antilles, Bertha C. Boschulte, Joseph Gomez, Joseph Sibilly, Julius E. Sprauve, Leonard Dober, Lockhart, Sts. Peter and Paul, Ulla Muller, V.I. Montessori, Wesleyan Academy and Yvonne Bowsky.
The four students with the highest individual scores were given Banco Popular savings accounts presented by Raymond Green. They will now advance to the State MATHCOUNTS finals, to be held on St. Thomas, March 26.
Celebrating its 26th anniversary, the 2009 competition will consist of approximately 40,000 students, representing over 6,000 schools from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, U.S. territories, the Department of Defense and State Department affiliated schools. Rotary Club of St. Thomas II is a sponsor of the local competition.
