Lutheran Social Services of the Virgin Islands welcomed eight students from the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing to serve at Flambouyant Gardens the week of Feb. 20. The week’s events included an orientation and house visits to the residents. The week will conclude with a Walk-A-Thon from 9 a.m. to noon on Friday, Feb. 24.
The Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing students: Lisa Cullen, Stephanie Elliott, Hyo-Jung (Rachel) Kim, Amu Kuo, Rachel Lee, Kyungjin Lee, Shannon Orama and Kaitlin Pillion are accompanied by their instructor Rachel Breman. This group consists of undergraduate nursing students and the visit is part of their clinical work for the course in public health nursing.
Nineteen individuals from AmeriCorps’ Project Reach — Lutheran Social Services of the Virgin Islands will participate as well. It gives participants a chance to apply their skills and ideas towards helping others as well as meeting critical needs in the community. For the past 18 years, Project Reach has been a proud grantee of the National and Community Service Award.
The Flambouyant Gardens complex on St. Croix consists of 56 one-bedroom apartment units and a community center providing subsidized housing for senior citizens and the disabled in our community. The residents are looking forward to participating in the Walk-A-Thon and to helping promote health and well being in the community.
“We are excited to join forces with the seniors and young adults in our community to celebrate the great work of the Johns Hopkins University Nursing Students. We are proud to work together to give those at Flambouyant Gardens an opportunity to participate in the Walk-A-Thon. It is a great way to show the residents they have support as they take these steps towards being healthier,” said Junia John-Straker, CEO of Lutheran Social Services of the Virgin Islands.
