The Forum Film Festival Brings Three Award Winners to Market Square East

0

The eleventh Forum Film Festival kicks off at Market Square East on May 16 with “The Kid With A Bike,” the winner of the Grand Prize at last year’s Cannes Film Festival. Described by The New York Times as “a quietly rapturous film about love and redemption,” the film is the latest work of the Dardenne brothers. In French with English subtitles, the film is set in Belgium. Thomas Doret plays Cyril, the kid of the title. He is motherless, living in an orphanage and abandoned by his father who proves only too keen to get rid of him. Cyril runs into Samantha – literally. Samantha , a local hair dresser played by Cécile de France, agrees to take care of Cyril. Her nature simply tells her to do the right thing. Cyril, dressed mainly in red grabs our attention from the start. His fate which seems uncertain up to the final frame matters as much to us as to Samantha. But the real reason to see this film is that it offers something both rare and different: a credible portrait of goodness.
The second film in the series on May 23 – “A Separation” – the winner of this year’s Oscar for Best Foreign Film it comes from Iran. It begins with two middle class Iranians contemplating divorce and follows the relationship as it moves towards a climax involving class, gender, age, faith and death.
“In Darkness” the final film on May 30 is set in wartime Poland under the control of the Nazis. Bearing a resemblance to Schindler’s List, the true story is about a man who helps Jews trying to escape from the destruction of the ghetto. “In Darkness” was recognized with a special presentation at the Toronto Film Festival and nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Film.
All three films begin at 7 p.m. at Market Square East Cinemas. Tickets for each showing are $12, $10 for teachers and $5 for students. Tickets are on sale at the Reichhold Center (690-1559), Dockside Bookshop, Interiors and Home Again. Tickets will also be available at the cinema each night of the showing.
