Buck Island 50th Anniversary Lecture Series Continues

0

In celebration of Buck Island Reef’s 50th anniversary year as a National Monument, the National Park Service (NPS) continues its public lectures about Buck Island Reef National Monument on every second Thursday of each month.
December’s lecture, entitled “Buck Island’s Ancient Peoples Seen and Unseen: The Archaeology of Buck Island Reef NM,” will be held from 5-6 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 13, in the Danish Guinea West India Company Warehouse/ Slave Market Building.
This month’s lecture features Dr. Meredith Hardy, an anthropologist and archaeologist of the NPS’s Southeast Archaeological Center, Tallahassee, Florida. Dr. Hardy is no stranger to St. Croix or BUIS. She completed the first preliminary report on the archaeological resources at BUIS (2006), and wrote her dissertation on the prehistory of St. Croix and its many different cultures (2007). The Christiansted National Historic Site parking lot will be free and open for this event until 7 p.m.
The Thursday lecture series will continue into 2013 with several new titles and some repeats for those that missed some of the topics. They will continue on Jan. 10, 2013, with a repeat of Susan Duke, concession specialist, who will talk about the history of tourism and travel to Buck Island over the past 50 years. The series will continue into 2013.
