National Park Service 2013 Lecture Series Begins January10

0

Due to the increased success of the National Park Service’s (NPS) public lectures about Buck Island Reef National Monument on the second Thursday of each month, NPR will expand its topics to cover issues relevant to all three parks on St. Croix.
January’s lecture entitled, “How Do We Get There? The Concessions Program at Buck Island Reef NM,” will be held from 5-6 p.m. in the Danish Guinea West India Company Warehouse/ Slave Market Building. This month’s lecture will examine the 30+ year history of the NPS Concessions program that ensures access to Buck Island Reef NM’s beaches and reefs. NPS continues to depend on private businesses to facilitate visitor access at many national park units. This lecture includes very interesting analysis about the historical trends of tourism on St. Croix and is extremely useful for people thinking about the state of tourism on St. Croix. Buck Island Reef is one of the few where local concessions convey the majority of park visitors. Susan Duke, concessions specialist for Buck Island Reef NM, will talk about the development of the program and illustrate history of some of the island’s ambassadors and their boats.
The Christiansted National Historic Site parking lot will be free and open for this event until 7 p.m. www.nps.gov
