Kid Tri-Athletes Race at Chenay Bay

42.The Thanksgiving weekend ended on an energetic note as 32 young athletes ran and swam Sunday morning in the Junior Tri V.I. Succotash Splash ‘n Drumstick Dash at Chenay Bay.

The competition pitted the young athletes on: 5 to 6 year olds –; 7 to 8 year olds –; 9 to 11 year olds – 100-meter swim and a half mile run; and 12 to 15 year olds – a 200-meter swim and a one mile run.

The 5-6 year olds were led by Logan Jones, who finished the 25-meter swim and quarter-mile run three minutes, 48 seconds. Aden Rojas came in second, just four seconds off the pace, and Ozzy Odom finished third. Bella Davis-McCarthy, a first-time competitor, won the girls’ division in a time of 4:25.

In the 7-8 category (50-meter swim and a quarter mile run) saw Mason Lambert overcome Tyler Jones’ lead after the swimming leg overtake him in the run, winning in a time of 3:27. Jones finished in 3:36. Rodney Moorehead was the third place boy with a time of 4:29. Kirra Lambert was the first female to cross the line in the age group, taking third overall with a time of 3:53. Maria Wilson, running in the 7-8 age group for the first time, was second female at 4:19.

Erin Andrews lead the 9-11 group (100-meter swim, half-mile run) from the start, holding off a fast-approaching Brice Richards on the run to win in a time of 6:42. Richards was clocked at the same time, but finished a whisper behind her to take second place. Colin Gray (6:55) was second place male; Joey Croney was third.7:46.) Andrews was the only girl competing in the age group.

Colby Moran was the sole competitor in the 12-15 category. He covered the 200-meter swim and mile run in 12:25.

Food Town donated chocolate milk and oranges for the youngsters after the race, and the Good Hope Country Days School Interact Club helped on the course.
