Virgin Islands National Track and Field (VINTF) team member Eduardo Garcia ran a personal record and set an unofficial V.I. national record in the 3000m on Saturday at the Rod McRavy Memorial Track and Field Meet at the University of the Kentucky in Lexington, Ky., with a time of eight minutes, 19 seconds (8:19) and finished second in his heat. Garcia is a junior at the University of Florida, where he also runs cross-country.
In November, at his first competition as a VINTF member at the CAC Games in Vera Cruz, Mexico, he finished fourth in the 10,000 meters with a time of 30:51 — the fastest ever for a V.I. runner in the CAC Games for the qualifier for the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto, Canada. His personal records include: 3:59.87 in the 1500m; 14:22.58 in the 5000m; 29:32.97 in the 10k.
Kayla King is in her freshman year of college at Viterbo University in Wisconsin. Initially, she had two seconds and a fourth place finishes in indoor competition — her first time competing indoors. Her second place finishes were at the St. Mary’s Early Birdinal meet two weeks ago in St. Mary’s, Minn., with times of 7.91 seconds and 27:72 seconds in the 55m and 200m, respectively. She finished fourth in the 60m at the Michigan State University Chuck Petersen Invitational with a time of 6.71. Over this past weekend, she finished first in the 60m at the Stout Open Meet in Menomonie, Wis.
“A week after winning two events, freshman Kayla King (FR/St. Croix, V.I.) led the V-Hawks, running the fast time in the women’s 60 meter dash prelims, and finishing first overall in the finals in 7.96. Also competing in the 200m dash, King finished fifth overall in 27.09. With that time, King has run the fastest 60 and 200 meter times in the Midwest Collegiate Conference this season,” according to a Vitebo University release.
Kayla represented the V.I. in the IAAF World Youth Championships in Donetsk, Ukraine, in 2013. She has teammates Alile Brown and Karen Dascent at Viterbo who are also freshmen; all three are graduates of St. Croix Educational Complex High School.
