Next Generation Scholars Program Begins Application Process

0

An initiative of the Community Foundation (CFVI) of the Virgin Islands and funded by the Lana Vento Fund for the Virgin Islands, the Next Generation Scholars Program (NGSP) provides first generation college-bound students enrolled in one of the public schools on St. Thomas with the coaching and support necessary to help them achieve their dreams of higher education. Beginning as early as their sophomore year, eligible scholars are supported in high school and beyond to ensure success in college. NGS scholars then become mentors to other high school students in the Virgin Islands.
The program works with parents, mentors, donors, school personnel and educational institutions to prepare scholars for higher education and success in life. Parental participation is a key component of the program and is done through workshops, seminars and individual family meetings.
While in high school, scholars participate in the Saturday College Preparation Academy, which focuses on preparation for the college admissions and application process, career awareness and exploration, and life skills training (résumé building, interviewing skills and personal finance). The program also provides individual college counseling meetings with scholars and their families, and on-site school visits.
In college, scholars transition to the College Success initiative. They are supported through individualized counseling, assistance with summer employment, preparation for graduate school and/or a career in their chosen field. NGSP alumni then serve the greater community as mentors.
