When screenwriter Oliver Ottley and director Alton Glass visited the U.S. Virgin Islands to screen their award-winning film “CRU” at the end of their 18-city tour, they did not expect to find the territory so eager for a film revolution. In just five days, the team visited over 350 students on three islands and premiered CRU on St. Thomas and St. Croix at the Caribbean Cinema theaters. They visited the media on St. Thomas and did some location scouting on St. Croix.
On all fronts the message was the same: our islands are excited for the opportunities a revitalized film industry could bring.
“We would like to sincerely thank all the educators and students that showed an interest in our film and our story. We have been inspired by everyone’s support, and we hope to inspire others by sharing our experiences,” said Oliver W. Ottley III, musician and co-writer of “CRU.”
The team visited the Charlotte Amalie High School, Antilles School, Gifft Hill School, the Ivanna Eudora Kean High School, St. Croix Educational Complex and the St. Croix Central High School. As expected, the team was blown away by the beauty of the Virgin Islands and had the pleasure of visiting Fort Christiansvearn, Point Udall, the Cruzan Rum Distillery and local treasures such as the famous Harvey’s Restaurant. Every landscape, every experience dancing around in Oliver and Alton’s mind stirred up visions of scenes shot in the U.S.V.I. as part of a potential multi-network TV deal.
