March 6, 2006 – Lt. Gov. Vargrave Richards welcomed Deputy Secretary of the Interior P. Lynn Scarlett as well as government and business representatives to St. Croix and the Virgin Islands for the Department of Interior's Business Opportunities Mission, which began Monday at the Buccaneer Hotel.
Richards highlighted economic incentives in the territory and implored the delegation to take advantage of this unique opportunity, according to a news release.
"St. Croix is poised to serve as the gateway of the Caribbean with the expansion of Henry Rohlsen airport," Richards said in the release. "We also have the largest oil refinery on the western hemisphere as well as several watch and fine jewelry manufacturers on island. We encourage you to look at St. Croix as a major investment opportunity."
He said several new hotel developments were in the works, including the $500 million Annaly Bay Project and plans to make the Gallows Bay dock into a world-class marina for mega-yachts.
"The Turnbull/Richards Administration has worked very hard to create a business-friendly environment and have realized that in order for the Virgin Islands to strive, we must diversify the economy, which is now tourism-based," Richards said.
The delegation will visit St. Thomas on Wednesday and St. John on Friday.
