Nov. 25, 2003 – Carmen Leona Neaver Carty of St. Thomas died on Nov. 18 at the Roy L. Schneider Hospital at the age of 83. Viewing will be Tuesday, Nov. 25, from 3 to 4 p.m. at the John Thomas Funeral Chapel. The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at All Saints Cathedral.
She is survived by her sons, Dale, Dalton and Darrell; grandchildren and a great-grandchild; and other relatives and friends.
She was "a beloved and much respected educator for more than forty years, and matriarch of the Carty family," said a release from Gov. Charles W. Turnbull extending condolences. She was the governor's second-grade teacher.
She began her teaching career after graduating from the Charlotte Amalie High School in 1939, and went on to teach at Bergs Home and then the Dober Elementary School. After teaching at the Joseph Sibilly Elementary School for two years, she moved to the Abraham Lincoln School, now the J. Antonio Jarvis Elementary School, where she taught the fourth grade until her retirement in 1984. She participated in AARP and the American Lung Association, according to the release
"On behalf of a grateful community and the Government of the United States Virgin Islands, I extend profound sympathies and condolences to her sons … and all who mourn the passing of this community stalwart," Turnbull said.
