Sept. 17, 2003 — Sheep and goat farmers, scientists and other interested individuals will have an opportunity to learn more about animal research being conducted at the University of the Virgin Islands at the Animal Science Program Open House to be held from 4 to 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 25.
Attendees will be able to tour the sheep research facility, located at the southeast corner of UVI's St. Croix campus, view the hair sheep flock, hear about current animal science research and see the results of student projects, according to a release.
Featured sheep will be the St. Croix White, the Barbados Black Belly and the Dorper (developed in South Africa). The Great Pyrenees guard dogs, who keep company with the flocks, will also be available for observation. Data from previous research projects and sheep production literature will be available. Scientific equipment, including an endoscope, will be on display.
Complimentary beverages and grilled lamb kabobs will be served.
Dr. Robert Godfrey, assistant director of the Agricultural Experiment Station, anticipates progressive discussion with local livestock farmers. For more information contact Dr. Godfrey at 692-4042 or the Agricultural Experiment Station at 692-4020.
