May 27, 2003 — The winners of the 2003 Congressional Art Competition were announced last week from a contest among high school students who compete to represent their congressional district in Washington, D.C. Winners travel to the nation's capital and have their paintings hung for a whole year at the U.S. Capitol building.
Delegate to Congress Donna M. Christensen said that this year's first-place winner is St. Croix Country Day School senior Laura McTigue. McTigue and her winning artwork, titled "Grasping For Your Heart," will travel to Washington for the June 24 art show and ceremonies.
Second place went to Darcia Samuel from the Ivanna Eudora Kean High School, and third place to Jerylyn Thomas of the St. Croix Educational Complex.
"I am pleased once again to host the winners from the Virgin Islands for this art competition that provides a great creative opportunity for the young people in my district," Christensen said.
