Feb. 10, 2003 – The organizer of two live jazz spectaculars on the island of St. John this season is taking his act to Coral Bay next, for an all-night blues festival.
Promoter Steve Simon says he expects hundreds of music fans to converge on the Moravian Church ballfield on March 1, when The Moonlight Foundation will present the St. John Blues Festival.
The free all-night blues festival will features country blues recording stars Prestage & Hawkins, lead guitarist Albert Castiglia and drummer Willie "Big Eyes" Smith with the Muddy Waters Legendary Blues Band.
And the best part of it, Simon says, is that the price is right. "A free concert removes the greatest barrier to making a decision about what to do for the evening," he said.
Simon also said he has persuaded a number of St. John taxi drivers to drop their fare from Cruz Bay to Coral Bay to $5 each way. Free round-trip ferry service also is being arranged on the Caribe Tide, leaving Red Hook at 6:15 p.m. and returning to Red Hook around 2 a.m.
The most recent Moonlight Foundation presentation, held Dec. 28 at the Westin Resort, saw the reunion of two Latin jazz musicians from Cuba, pianist Hilario Duran and trumpeter Ernesto Simpson. On Nov. 30, also at the Westin, the foundation presented pianist Roan Creque with Dion Parson on drums and Bill Saxton on saxophone.
