LABOR OFFERING SUMMER COLLEGE INTERN PROGRAM

0

Feb. 3, 2003 – College juniors, seniors and graduate students wanting summer work experience related to their planned careers may be able to find jobs through the Labor Department's Labor Investing For Tomorrow internship program.
Students must be ages 18-25 and must have a college grade-point average of at least 2.8 on a 4-point scale.
Since the number of internships is limited, Labor Commissioner Cecil Benjamin said in a release, it's wise to apply early.
Department information officer Janelle Gumbs said the program gives students "work experience in their chosen field." She said the application process includes submitting a 250-word essay on contributions an intern can make to the summer internship program and to the host employer.
Gumbs said the number of internships available has not been determined. Last year, she said, 15 students participated in the LIFT program, 11 on St. Croix and four on St. Thomas..
Application forms are available at the Labor Department offices on St. Croix and St. Thomas and can be requested by e-mail to LIFT. They also can be requested by registered mail sent to the Labor Department at 16AB Church Street, St. Croix VI 00820, or 53A and 54A&B Kronprindsens Gade, St. Thomas VI 00820.
Completed applications are due March 31. They must be submitted to the Youth Job Development and Training Office, 2203 Church Street, Christiansted, St. Croix VI 00820-4612. For more information, call 776-3700 on St. Thomas or 773-1994 on St. Croix.
