Jan. 29, 2003 – Young artists ages 8 to 12 are invited to participate in the Arts Olympiad to be held Sept. 6-13 in Washington, D.C.
The Arts Olympiad happens every four years. It is run by the Washington-based International Child Art Foundation and is part of the International ChildArt Festival, which will see children from more than 100 countries gathered in the nation's capital for the event.
The first step for young Virgin Islands artists takes place at their schools. Teachers at public and private schools are being asked to solicit work from their pupils and then decide which piece will represent the school in territorial competition to select the V.I. entry.
Independent panels of art educators and artists are to choose the winning entry from each state and territory. Each winner, accompanied by a parent and teacher, will be invited to the ChildArt Festival.
The artwork can be paintings or drawings but must be a standard size — 18 by 12 inches.
In terms of content, "It's open as long as the piece fits in with this year's theme," said Steven Steele, Delegate Donna M. Christensen's Washington office manager. The theme is "Me in the New Millennium."
March 31 is the deadline for submissions. There is no entry fee.
