Jan. 29, 2003 – The Miss UVI Ambassadorial Competition will select the new year's Miss UVI at 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 15, at Island Center on St. Croix.
The University of the Virgin Islands Queen's Committees said that four contestants will compete for the title at the show themed "Enchanting Empresses of UVI."
The four are Keischa Brooks, Alba Harrigan, Michael Lake, and Demelza Lawrence. The first three listed are students at UVI's St. Thomas campus, and Demelza attends UVI St. Croix, said a UVI release.
Tickets are $15 for UVI students with identification, $20 for the general public and $25 at the door.
On St. Croix tickets are available at B'Unique Beauty Salon and Education Central (Sunny Isle). On St. Thomas tickets are available at Nisky Pharmacy (Nisky Center), International Records & Tapes (Backstreet), VI Bridal & Tuxedo (Tutu Mall), Sunrise Pharmacy (Redhook) and Modern Music (Havensight).
Tickets are also available at UVI Bookstores on both islands. Discounted UVI student tickets are only available at the UVI Bookstores.
Keischa is a senior pursuing a bachelor's degree in business management with a concentration in marketing. A former member of UVI's Student Government Association, she is now president of the Debate Society. She plans to obtain a law degree from Howard University after graduating from UVI, and hopes to become a chief executive officer or entrepreneur in the fashion industry. If chosen as Miss UVI, Keischa plans to serve as a positive role model for students.
Alba, a sophomore majoring in psychology, plans initially to become an interior decorator. She will use her decorating skills to create harmony in the home when she later becomes a clinical psychologist specializing in marriage counseling and enrichment. If selected as Miss UVI, Alba plans to visit local schools, speaking on the importance of self-esteem.
Michael is a senior accounting major and president of UVI's graduating class of 2003. She is also a resident assistant and accounting tutor who plans to earn a master's degree upon graduating from UVI and eventually become a Certified Public Accountant. If selected as Miss UVI, Michael plans to be an advocate for HIV/AIDS education and domestic violence awareness.
Demelza, a senior pursuing a bachelor's degree in business administration with a concentration in marketing, plans to work for the Tourism Department marketing the Virgin Islands. She also plans to expand her family business, Caribbean Cooling Co., marketing their services throughout the Caribbean. She is a member of the Sickle Cell Foundation Parent Support Group of St. Croix. If selected as Miss UVI, Demelza plans to promote UVI and advocate on behalf of the students.
The contestants will be judged on business wear, introduction, ambassadorial presentation, talent, evening wear, question and answer, and personal interview. The personal interview will be conducted prior to the competition.
