Aug. 28, 2002 – On Thursday, 44 participants in the University of the Virgin Islands Workforce and Economic Development Institute (WEDI) are expected to complete certification training in computer information technology and hospitality.
WEDI project director Mabel Maduro says the next phase of the process is to identify employers that can provide one-month internships, from Sept. 16 to Oct. 16, 2002, for those who complete the WEDI project training.
"The trainees have been pre-screened, carefully selected, and have received pre-employment and customized training in hospitality and computer information technology based on local and national industry standards," Maduro said.
At the conclusion of the program, the 29 trainees on St. Croix and 15 trainees on St. Thomas will have completed a total of 50 training hours in their respective areas, in addition to having successfully completed 25 hours of job readiness skills training.
Employers interested in registering and obtaining additional information may contact the WEDI office at 714-7620 or E-mail [email protected].
The Institute is funded by the U.S. Housing and Urban Development Department. It is a community partnership between UVI, the V.I. Human Services Department (JOBS), the V.I. Labor Department, the UVI Small Business Development Center, the UVI Workforce Development Advisory Board, Millard Computing and Consulting Services, the Caribbean Institute for Training and Development, the Renaissance Grand Beach Resort and the St. Croix Vocational Education Complex.
The WEDI computer information technology class on St. Croix has been taught Monday through Friday, at the Vocational Education Complex. Also on St. Croix, the WEDI hospitality training class has been conducted in the UVI SBDC Training Center in the Sunshine Mall Monday through Thursday. On St. Thomas, the hospitality training class has been conducted Monday through Thursday at the Renaissance Grand Beach Resort.
