June 18, 2002 – Sankt Hans Aften. In English, it's called St. John's Eve a happy summer festival with roots in ancient Viking traditions. It is celebrated throughout the Scandinavian countries on the summer solstice.
The St. Thomas/ St. John Friends of Denmark Society cordinally invites the interested public to join in celebrating Sankt Hans Aften June 24 with a special presentation by featured speaker Gail Schulterbrandt-Rivera.
Schulterbrandt-Rivera is well known locally as a nutritionists, but her enduring passion is history, said a release from the society. She is active with the St. Thomas Historic Trust and has written several articles and booklets on island history.
Another attraction of the evening will be a silent auction with lots of great finds from treasure trove.
Society president Eleanor Cerge will have important new information on the "Friendship 2003 Festival" which will be held this coming March. Over 50 members of the Dansk Vestindisk Selskab will travel to the Virgin Islands to spend two weeks visiting homes of island residents on St. Thomas and St. Croix.
Anyone who is interested in becoming a member of the society or in hosting for the upcoming festival is encouraged to attend.
Sankt Hans Aften will be held at 5:30 p.m. Monday, June 24, at the V.I. Cultural Heritage Institute, 5-6 Kongens Gade, also referred to as "Education Street." A donation of $10 will include refreshments and hors d'oeuvres. Suggested dress is island casual in red and white.
