May 15, 2002 – Monroe College, a business and technology school in New Rochelle, New York, is actively recruiting Virgin Islands students and will conduct an Admissions and Financial Aid Workshop at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the Holiday Inn Windward Passage Hotel.
The school hosted a similar workshop Wednesday at the Buccaneer Hotel on St. Croix.
According to a release from the school, Monroe is extending U.S.V.I. Educational Opportunity Grants of up to $6,000 to Class of 2002 graduates of the territory's four public high schools for the coming academic year.
"My experience in meeting personally with students from the Virgin Islands over the past several years has always been very positive, and the students whom we recruit adjust well academically and to being away from home," said Marc Jerome, vice president of the college, which was founded in 1933. "To encourage these students to attend Monroe College, we offer them very attractive financial aid packages."
Jerome said several of V.I. students at Monroe were recently named to the Dean's List and President’s List for maintaining grade-point averages of 3.4-3.69 and 3.70-4.0, respectively.
Named to the President's List were Olive Brudy and Crystal Lynch of St. Croix and Sonya Harrigan, Delvin James and Joyelle Swanston of St. Thomas. Named to the Dean's List was Louise Colburne of St. Thomas.
While Opportunity Grants have already been extended to students accepted for fall admission, Jerome said, more grants and scholarships remain available to V.I. students.
Monroe offers associate degrees in Accounting, Business Administration, Computer Science, Health Information Technology, Hospitality Management and Office Technologies. It offers bachelor’s degrees in Accounting, Business Management, General Business, and Information Systems. Monroe has been accredited by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools since 1990.
