Nov. 17, 2005 — Elton Lewis, the V.I. police commissioner, said Wednesday "Nothing's perfect" when talking about his department's communication system.
However, he appreciates that the department made a great stride forward recently as Hovensa donated to the Police Department a standby power generator radio transmitter for Recovery Hill on St. Croix.
Lewis said that until this donation whenever there was an island-wide power outage or an outage limited to Recovery Hill, the police officers on St. Croix were left without the use of the department's radio communications system.
Lewis told Hovensa Vice President Alex Moorhead about this lack of a standby power generator several months ago and requested that Hovensa donate a 30 kilowatts standby generator to the Police Department to eliminate this problem.
"Hovensa promptly purchased a 30 KW diesel engine-powered generator for the Police Department according to the Department’s technical specifications," said Moorhead.
A contractor employed by the Police Department installed the generator in a building that provides security and shelter from the weather.
Moorhead stated that Hovensa then made arrangements for a manufacturer-certified technician to start up the generator and ensure that it is functioning properly. On Oct. 6, the technicians determined that the generator was ready to supply power to the radio transmitter in the event of any power outage and he informed both officials of Hovensa and the Police Department of the generator's readiness.
Lewis in a recent letter to Moorhead said, "I wish to once again express our deepest heartfelt appreciation for Hovensa's generosity and support. Equipping the V.I. Police Department with a critically needed generator to power one of our key communication towers and the providing the technical assistance necessary to ensure it's properly installed in my estimation far exceeded the parameters of mere good corporate citizenship."
