January 12, 2002 – Seven high school students who exemplify the ideals of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will be honored by the Hebrew Congregation of St. Thomas at a special Shabbat service at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
This marks the eleventh year that the Congregation has paid tribute to Dr. King’s life and legacy by recognizing a student from each of the island’s high schools for commitment to social justice.
"We are very proud to honor these exceptional students for their contributions to their schools and to this community," said Trudie Prior, president of the Hebrew Congregation, in a release. "The Martin Luther King service is always one of our favorites, and we hope the community will join us in honoring these young people."
Each honored student will receive a certificate of honor from the Hebrew Congregation of St. Thomas in recognition of worthy accomplishments in the area of social justice and community-mindedness, as well as $200 U.S. savings bond.
The seven honorees, all selected by their principals and teachers, are: Roshini Rajwani, All Saints Cathedral School; Elenoe "Crew" Smith, Antilles School; Charaine Skelton, Charlotte Amalie High School; Bambi Lettsome, Ivanna Eudora Kean High School; Christina Burt, Saints Peter and Paul Catholic School; Clarence Brown, Seventh-Day Adventist School; and Ashon A. Browne, Wesleyan Academy.
Guest speaker for the event will be Sam Topp. The public is invited.
