Nov. 6, 2005 – St. Thomas police have identified the victim of the territory's latest murder as 18-year-old Janus Browne. Browne died of a gunshot wound to the neck, Thomas Hannah, V.I. Police Department spokesman, said Saturday. Browne was sitting in the passenger seat of a Mazda Protege which came under gunfire while it was parked near Holy Family Catholic Church and East End Lumber in Annas Retreat.
Browne died at the scene but a second victim, a 17 year old who was in the driver's seat survived the attack. Hannah said police have learned only few details about the shooting. "The victim has told investigators that they fell asleep in the vehicle and were awakened by gunfire." The victim, Hannah added, could not say who the assailant was and in what direction he may have fled. The 17 year old, also a resident of Anna's Retreat, was shot in the finger. He was treated at Schneider Regional Medical Center. The shooting was reported to police at 3:10 am Saturday. Sources had said earlier that the perpetrator fired into the vehicle from the passenger side of the compact car. Other reports on Saturday said that up to five shots were fired at the scene.
Hannah urged anyone with information to call police at 777-8711, emergency
911 or the Major Crime Unit at 715-5534 or 715-5546.
