June 5, 2001 – Two suspects were in police custody in the British Virgin Islands Tuesday in connection with the fatal stabbing around 3 a.m. of a 21-year-old St. Thomas man, Germaine Brown.
Brown was reported dead on arrival at Peebles Hospital on Tortola after receiving multiple stab wounds. According to B.V.I. police sources, the St. Thomas native, an employee of the Native Son ferry company, was at a party on Brewer's Beach on Tortola's Ocean Coast when the stabbing occurred.
Radio station ZBVI said the homicide was the first of the year in the British Virgins.
B.V.I. police authorities would provide no information as to the identity of the two suspects or the suspected motive for the killing.
Relatives of the victim said police have told them that several theories are being investigated. An uncle of Brown's said on ZBVI Tuesday that his nephew "either was a victim of mistaken identity or was involved in an ongoing dispute with his assailants."
One of the Native Son ferries made a special trip to St. Thomas to pick up Brown's mother around 4 a.m. Tuesday. Among his other survivors is a baby born five days ago.
