April 24, 2001 – The State and Local Government Law Section of the American Bar Association is holding its annual spring meeting this week on St. Thomas, at the Wyndham Sugar Bay Resort.
The ABA section "provides a common meeting ground and an impartial forum for its members, who are engaged in dealing with problems of urban, state, territorial and local governments," Tom Bolt, V.I. Bar Association president-elect, stated in a release. The body seeks "to foster a better understanding of the law relating to governments and other public bodies," he said.
One topic the lawyers will address during the meeting, which runs from Wednesday through Saturday, is how hazard mitigation plans can reduce injury and death caused by natural disasters and improve economic recovery afterward. They will also examine issues in developing financing for governments.
At a "hot topics" luncheon, participants will hear reports on land-use issues, including regulatory takings, comprehensive planning and growth management, ethics and land-use planning, and telecommunications, the release stated.
