April 19, 2001 – As part of National Teach Children to Save Day, employees from Chase Manhattan Bank will visit three local schools to teach students about managing their money.
The Chase employees will touch on topics such as, budgeting, the difference between needs and wants, the importance of saving for emergencies and how interest makes money grow.
Games and other hands-on activities will be used to amplify the concepts, according to a release from Chase.
Teach Children to Save Day is sponsored nationally by the American Bankers Association Education Foundation. Bankers all over the country will be making presentations to students in kindergarten through 12th grade.
Local plans include two presentations at 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Friday at Charlotte Amalie High School on St. Thomas; two presentations at 8:30 a.m. and 9:45 a.m Tuesday for fourth and fifth graders at Sprauve School on St. John and a presentation, also on Tuesday, at Central High on St. Croix. At Central interested students have been asked to sign up, according to Chase spokeswoman Yasmine Haynes, who couldn't say what time the event would be held.
The release said, "Studies show that people who learn to save early in life usually make smarter financial decisions later. National Teach Children to Save Day starts kids off on the right path to saving for their future."
