The Virgin Islands Track and Field Federation announced Tuesday that three Virgin Islands track and field athletes have recently competed on two college teams that won national championships in the United States.
Billy Bohlke of St. Croix is the top middle distance runner at Louisiana State University, which won the prestigious National Indoor Championships in the Division I of the National Collegiate Athletics Association.
Laverne Jones and Rodney Pitts, also of St. Croix, compete for Barton County Community College, which won the National Indoor Championships of the National Junior Collegiate Athletic Association.
These athletes are candidates for the Virgin Islands World Championships Team which will compete in the IAAF World Championships to be held in Edmonton, Canada in August.
Each of these athletes grew up on St. Croix and competed in local track meets, school meets, road races and cross-country events.
Jones, a freshmen, is a graduate of the St. Croix Educational Complex where she was coached by Devon Peters. Pitts, a sophomore, was a member of the V.I. Express Track Club and coached by Ramon Stevens. Bohlke a junior, who has competed in V.I. Pace road races, graduated from high school in Texas.
