A free two-day introductory Virtues Education Workshop offered by the National Spiritual Assembly of the Baha'is of the Virgin Islands will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Nov. 10 and 11 at Mafalie's Day Care on Kronprindsens Gade.
Titled "Awakening the Virtues Within: Simple Ways to Bring Out the Best in our Children and Ourselves," the workshop is funded by the Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands, and by a grant from Mr. and Mrs. Ricardo J. Charaf.
Baha' i spokesperson Cathy Von Gonten said the workshop is open to parents, teachers, caregivers and anyone with an interest in children. It is being conducted by Sally and Bill Wiley from Puerto Rico.
"Virtues are the qualities of the human spirit, the content of our character, the essence of being human," said Van Gonten. The workshop will feature techniques for modeling virtues and for using the language of virtues to acknowledge, instruct and correct.
Workshop participants will learn to recognize "teachable moments," and turn them into opportunities for growth, Van Gonten said. The participants will examine the role of the parent and teacher as an authority in applying "educative" discipline, and learn how to use boundaries, ground rules, and consequences.
Transformations in relationships within families and a more positive environment in classrooms, she said, are two of the benefits to be gained from the two-day sessions. For more information, call 774-3648 or 776-7000, ext. 246.
