Oct. 5, 2005 — The nationally acclaimed stage presentation of "Realizing the Dream! One Community at a Time" will be performed on the St. Croix campus of the University of the Virgin Islands at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12 in the Cafetorium.
The presentation consists of a collage of Asante ceremonial dance, storytelling, poetry, lecture, audience discussion and film. It will be performed by its creators, the Nanas Morrow – the husband and wife team of Nana Kwasi Scott Douglas Morrow and Nanahemaa Akousa Brenda Berg-Morrow.
The heart of the presentation will be the airing of the Nanas Morrow's award-winning film "Of One Blood: Returning Home to Africa." The film chronicles the Nanas Morrow's holy pilgrimage to the Asante Nation and captures events at the palace of Nana Barimah Abeyie Ntori Nimpah II, the king of Sekyere Kwamang Traditional Area. The film was named best documentary at the 1999 Black International Cinema Festival in Berlin, Germany.
Following the film screening and story telling, there will be a discussion of the historical causes of racism and the subsequent outgrowth of other "-isms" in society.
Claude Steele, UVI's associate campus administrator for student affairs, said the presentation's theme covers such subjects as slave history and reparations.
The Nanas Morrow are Pan-Africanists who have enjoyed multifaceted careers as choreographers, filmmakers, educators, scholars and human rights activists. They were installed into the royal family of the Sekyere Kwamang Traditional Area, Asante Nation, Ghana, West Africa, as special advisors to the king and queen mother of Sekyere Kwaamang in 1997.
They now serve as ministers-in-chief of the Embassy of Sekyere Kwamang Traditional Area. The embassy, located in Queens, New York, represents the Sekyere Kwamang educational and human development interests to the American public.
There is no charge for the stage presentation, which will take place at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 12 in the Cafetorium on UVI's St. Croix campus. A rap session is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 13, also in the UVI Cafetorium. The UVI community and the general public are invited to both sessions.
