Maho Bay Camps on St. John is one of 17 tourism destinations in 13 countries to win a Year 2000 Green Globe Commendation Award for environmental performance.
Established in 1994 as an outgrowth of the 1992 Rio de Janeiro Earth Summit, Green Globe is an environmental management and certification organization that works with "communities, companies and consumers to promote sustainability in tourism through sound environmental management practices."
Eco-tourism pioneer Stanley Selengut developed Maho Bay Camps within the V.I. National Park nearly 25 years ago. He remains committed to "the creation of eco-lodge destinations that are sustainable, regionally self-sufficient, resource-protective, educational and enjoyable," a Maho Bay release states.
Guests are housed in tents and traverse the property on raised walkways at the resort, which "strives to create a positive guest experience by exposing visitors to sustainable, balanced approaches to ecosystem management." Great views, good food, interpretive and recreational activities and exposure to local culture are extra added attractions, the release says.
