Shawn-Michael Malone, a pledged Vice President Al Gore candidate for the position of delegate to the 2000 democratic national convention, officially announced his candidacy Monday.
If elected, Shawn-Michael Malone will be one of six (6) delegates representing the Virgin Islands Democratic Party to cast their votes to nominate Vice President Al Gore to be the Democratic Presidential Candidate at the National Convention which will be held August 14-17, 2000 in Los Angeles, Calif.
In 1996, Mr. Malone was elected as one of the Virgin Islands delegates to the Chicago Convention and served as that delegation's deputy whip, along with Sen. Arturo Watlington, who was the delegation's whip four years ago.
Shawn-Michael Malone brings sound qualifications and experience to this non-paying position. He has a bachelor of arts degree in political science from Hampton University, serves as the St. Thomas district office manager for the Honorable Donna M. Christian-Christensen, is an elected member of the Virgin Islands Democratic party's Territorial Committee and Virgin Islands Board of Elections, and was recently nominated by Gov. Charles W. Turnbull to serve on the Virgin Islands Public Services Commission. As many are aware, his community involvement is vast and varied. He is a member of the Zeta Xi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi fraternity, Inc., honored as 1995 distinguished alumni of Sts. Peter & Paul School for his accomplishments and service to the community, served as president of the Young Democrats from 1994-96, a very active participant in Virgin Islands Carnival for nearly three decades, and is now in the process of publishing his undergraduate senior thesis entitled, "Alternative Modes of Political Relationships Available to the U.S. Virgin Islands by the United States of America".
Members of the Virgin Islands delegation of the Democratic Party at the convention will consist of the state chair (Mr. James A.. O'Bryan, Jr.), the vice chair (Mrs. Carmen Gonzalez), the executive director (Ms. Pamela
Richards), super delegates (Gov. Charles W. Turnbull and Congresswoman Donna M. Christian-Christensen), national committeeman (former Gov. Alexander A. Farrelly), national committeewoman (Ms. Clarice Blake), and six elected delegates (three from each district) and one alternate.
Once again, Shawn-Michael Malone is asking for the support of all registered Democrats residing in the St. Thomas-St. John district Saturday, April 1 at the windward passage hotel. Polls open at 12 noon and close at 7:00 p.m. Shawn-Michael Malone is number three on the ballot. Please encourage your relatives and friends who are registered Democrats to come out and support him on Saturday.
