On-Line Publisher Visits Class
by Lyster Challenger and Pauline Chinnery
On March 1 Shaun A. Pennington, publisher of V.I. Source Inc.,paid a visit to and led an informative discussion in the Charlotte Amalie High School Journalism class. The main purpose of her visit was to familiarize the class with her on-line newspaper and to give useful tips on how to improve the writing of our articles.
As a local media coordinator, Pennington has been involved in the on-line newspaper for almost two years. Though Pennington has never worked on a newspaper on the island or on the U.S. mainland her on-line newspaper has become a success.
The Source attracts about 10,000 viewers daily.
The Source is supported financially by banner ads which assist in payment of salaries for the staff.
After a brief summary about what makes the on-line newspaper function, Pennington began giving us recommendations on how to make our newspaper more captivating and interesting. The journalist gave us some helpful hints about using abbreviations , using photos to make stories more interesting, and understanding that it is okay to paraphrase quotes.
To help fully comprehend more about the style of writing a good newspaper, Pennnington donated a book to the class entitled, The Associated Press Stylebook and Libel Manual edited by Norm Goldstein. Pennington encouraged us to use the book when writing our stories.
Students greatly appreciated Pennington’s visit . Her vast knowledge
about the field of journalism will indeed be a vital help in the way this young journalism class progresses.
