BLACKBEARD'S SOLD TO INVESTORS

The Blackbeard's hotel property, which has been closed for about a year, was sold in May to a group of three investors, including local businessman David Abers, for an undisclosed amount of money.
Abers, and two U.S. investors — Craig Van Skaik and Amy Van Skaik — purchased the hotel from the Small Business Administration and will completely renovate the hotel, which opened in 1982. The name will be changed to the Inn at Blackbeard's Castle.
"We're really looking forward to our grand opening, which will be Oct. 15," Abers said.
The hotel has fallen into disrepair, partly because some hurricane damages have never been repaired, Abers said.
The restaurant, currently occupied by Cafe Lulu, will also be renovated.
Patricia LaCorte, owner of Cafe Lulu, said she is looking for a new location for Cafe Lulu and expects to reopen in the fall.
"The restaurant at Blackbeard's was wonderful — a great space and a great view. But I look forward to the challenges of a new enterprise," LaCorte said.
"I will continue to do my cooking classes. I am working on my new summer schedule," she added.
