Some members of former Gov. Roy L. Schneiders administration who got lump-sum payments for unused leave in the last days of the administration have received bills for overpayment from the Finance Department.
Acting Finance Commissioner Bernice Turnbull has sent letters ordering them to pay back what they owe, according to Tuesday's Daily News. Some of the money requested included unpaid Social Security taxes.
The letters said the money must be paid back by certified check or the cases will be sent to the attorney general, the Daily News reported.
The V.I. Bureau of Audit and Control is conducting an audit of what Gov. Charles W. Turnbull called Schneider's "midnight raid" on the treasury that resulted in 37 officials — including Schneider — getting nearly $400,000 for unpaid annual and other leave.
The first draft of that audit reportedly is finished, and finds not only several overpayments and no payments of Social Security but also five or six payments made improperly to people still on the government payroll.
