Despite economic concerns, Carnival '99 will be a grand event, according to organizers, who held a news conference Tuesday to jump-start the annual extravaganza.
Senators George Goodwin, Donald "Ducks" Cole and Roosevelt David showed up for the press conference to demonstrate their support for Carnival.
Cole said he had sent out letters to potential sponsors of the event, none of whom have responded yet. But he said that wouldn't prevent him from offering his full support to the committee.
David and Goodwin also pledged their support.
Carnival Committee chairman Kenneth Blake gave a preview of the events, beginning with Music Fest on April 9 and going through the annual fireworks display marking the end of Carnival on May 1.
The theme this year is "Going Back in Time for Carnival 1999."
Shaun-Michael Malone, representing Delegate Donna Christian-Christensen, said the event keeps "our dwindling culture alive."
Carnival Village will be named "Champagne Court" in honor of William "Champagne" Chandler, who has won the title of King of the Band year after year.
Bellows International, which sponsored this year's Carnival poster, was presented with a framed copy in thanks. This marks the first time the poster has been underwritten by a business.
