Randy Knight of Radio One-WVWI was named "Person of the Year" on Wednesday by the Rotary Club of St. Thomas II.
Knight was the 18th winner of the award established to honor a person who has struggled against the odds and who has taken significant actions to improve the islands.
Elliott "Mac" Davis, head of the Rotary selection committee, said Knight was chosen because of "his outstanding public service and regard for the welfare of the community."
Over his 25 years here, Knight has contributed to a slew of civic causes, Davis said, ranging from United Way to Boy Scouts to local sports teams.
Knight is vice chairman of Knight Quality Stations and president/general manager of Radio One (WVWI), KISS 101.3 (WWKS) and JAMZ 105 (WVJZ). He also has been a strong supporter of the V.I. America's Cup Challenge, does the Carnival fireworks every year and remains active in behind-the-scenes political goings-on.
Davis also referred to Knight as "Mr. Lucky," noting he sold St. Thomas-St. John Cable TV six weeks before Hurricane Marilyn hit in September 1995.
Knight joins a select group of Rotary honorees. According to the V.I. Independent, past winners include Sen. Lorraine L. Berry in 1997, Vinod "Vinnie" Mohanani in 1996, Edward E. Thomas in 1994, Athniel C. "Addie" Ottley in 1991, Dilsa Rohan Capdeville in 1990 and Dr. Roy L. Schneider in 1983. The first recipient was Wilbur "Bill" LaMotta in 1981.
