March 17, 2007 – The Parent Teacher Association of the Ulla Muller Elementary School will host its first Science Family Fun Night at 5:30 p.m., on Wednesday, March 21. The event, sponsored by the PTA and the Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands' (CFVI) Anderson Family Fund for Education, features an evening program of hands-on science activities geared toward students and their families.
The primary goals behind the development of the event were to involve parents in the educational process and to stimulate an excitement and interest in science among students and their families, providing opportunities for them to work together on simple, inquiry-based, age-appropriate science activities.
"Research shows that children who have parents involved in their educational lives perform at higher levels than those children whose parents are not involved," said PTA President Daniela Roumou. "Surveys also indicate that parents pass on to their children their own attitudes toward science and mathematics."
Local and federal government agencies, non-profit agencies and local businesses with specific interest in the various science fields will participate in the event including: the Department of Agriculture, the Department of Planning and Natural Resources' Division of Fish and Wildlife, the UVI Marine Science Division and Havensight Medical Laboratory.
Prior to the evening events, various classes will sponsor Science Fun Activities from 3-5:30 p.m. in the front courtyard. There will be many activities to enjoy, such as: Science in My Backyard, Science in My Kitchen, Science and Art, and much more.
