March 15, 2007 — St. Thomas parents will soon have a chance to ensure that their children are healthy and ready to tackle the rigors of school. On Friday, March 30, therapists will be providing free speech, hearing and development screenings for primary school-age children on the island.
The screenings, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Curriculum Center in Tutu (across from the Seventh Day Adventist Church), will help alert parents to any physical or learning disabilities their children might have.
As part of federal "Child Find" mandates, the Department of Human Services and the Department of Health hope to find out how many children in the territory need special attention, so their education and development does not stagnate.
The results will also help shape the state of the territory's Head Start program.
