Oct. 26, 2006 — The V.I. Board of Elections is prepared to handle the more than 53,000 registered voters during the Nov. 7 general election, according to Corinne Halyard-Plaskett, deputy supervisor of elections.
"We are prepared," said Halyard-Plaskett, adding that the board is busy testing machines, training workers and preparing poll registers in preparation for the big day.
Halyard-Plaskett said the board is hoping for an even better turnout than the 2004 general election, which recorded a 65 percent turnout of registered voters.
Although the voter registration deadline has passed, the Elections Board is still accepting registrations for absentee ballots. Halyard-Plaskett said the deadline for absentee registration is Nov 6. Depending on the closeness of the race, absentee ballots could figure prominently, she said.
According to Elections Board figures, registered voters include 32,308 Democrats, 2,838 Republicans, 1,778 Independent Citizens Movement members and 16,093 voters unaffiliated with a party. More than 29,000 registered voters are female.
"It is important for everyone to exercise your right to vote," Halyard-Plaskett said. "We are looking forward to a successful and transparent process on Election Day."
