Oct. 16, 2006 — A pedestrian suffered fatal injuries Sunday afternoon when struck by a motorist while attempting to cross the Melvin Evans Highway, police said.
The victim, Louis Malaykhan 60, a resident of Estate Profit, was pronounced dead at the Juan F. Luis hospital at 4:10 p.m., according to Thomas Hannah, police spokesperson.
The 37-year-old female driver, a resident of Estate La Grande Princess, was traveling east in the right lane when she saw a man in her lane attempting to cross, Hannah said. She tried to avoid him by moving into the left lane, but he tried to avoid her car by moving in the same direction, resulting in the fatal collision.
An investigation into the accident continues, Hannah said. Police have issued no citations to the driver, who remained at the scene following the accident. Hannah cautioned residents to avoid walking on the highway.
"The highway was never designed for pedestrians or bicyclists," he said, insisting that recreational walkers and bicyclists who use the highway put their lives in jeopardy. "Cars travel in excess of 50 mph. Your chance for survival is very slim."
