June 8, 2006 – The Coral Bay Community Council is hosting a celebration of Father's Day from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., on Sunday, June 18, with an authentic "Ol' Time Fish Fry and Bash," at Miss Lucy's Restaurant in Coral Bay. The prices for this Fish Fry are $25 for a family of four or more; $10 for adults and $5 for children under 12, and are being sold in advance at Connections and Connections East.
In addition to remembering and appreciating fathers and their importance to the family, the council wants to celebrate the richness of our cultural traditions. The old ways of cooking are sorely missed these days. Many remember the fish fry of the past with whole local fish grilled in the open; Johnny cake cooking in the pots; kids running and playing, having fun; the rhythms of calypso music freeing everyone up and helping us forget our worries and enjoy ourselves. Many newcomers to St. John have never really experienced a good, old fashioned fish fry like those of the past.
"We have revered elders who have so many unique skills and traditions that must be enjoyed and passed on to the youth," said long-time resident Bonny Corbeil, party organizer, along with Barbara Dalmida Thompson, both Coral Bay Community Council Board members.
She has got a number of St. John's famous local cooks to share their unique, traditional cooking skills.
KoKo and the Sunshine Band have volunteered both to play their wonderful music and help do the fish and chicken "right," like the old days. At its core of the band's music is the old root "scratch band" sound.
