Dear Source,
In response to Barbara Petersen's commentary on the qualifications of the next governor, I will take this one step further by saying that our senators needs to have some basic skills before being considered as candidates to elected office.
How many successful business leaders are in the Legislature currently? How many successful business leaders have ever been in office? You can probably count them on one hand.
Every two years our slate of candidates is a disappointing array of people who have never managed a company, never written a corporate budget, never had to pay excise or gross receipt taxes – in other words utterly out of touch with the mechanics of the economy. And these are the people we elect to make critical decisions that affect the bottom line of the territory. Couple that with a governor who is professional bureaucrat and we don't have a very effective system.
Until this community awakens to realize that the private sector drives the economy and the private sector is not the enemy of the masses but is actually the entity that supports them, we will continue to elect the wrong type of decision-makers. We will continue to elect business illiterate Senators who awkwardly stumble through their terms with arsenals of rhetoric on their backs.
