Aug. 20, 2007 — While Virgin Islanders prepared well for Hurricane Dean, they should “remain vigilant through the remainder of the 2007 hurricane season,” said Steve Parris, acting state director of the V.I. Territorial Emergency Management Agency (VITEMA).
“Hurricane Dean was essentially a test run for the Virgin Islands,” Parris said, according to a VITEMA news release. “Preparing for the storm gave us the opportunity to implement our emergency plans.”
Hurricane and disaster preparedness is a continuous process, he said.
“Now that the storm has passed, we should all take the time to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of our emergency plans,” Parris said. Hurricane Dean was the first major storm of what is predicted to be an active hurricane season.
Residents should replenish hurricane supplies and disaster kits in readiness for the next emergency. Anyone who has not secured hurricane supplies or made preparations is advised to do so. VITEMA is available to assist with emergency planning.
