July 4, 2007 — The Police Department is actively investigating the June 19 homicide in which James Cockayne, 21, was killed on St. John.
"We're receiving lot of information from the community," Police Commissioner James McCall said Wednesday, taking a quick break at the July 4th Parade.
Cockayne's family has put up a $10,000 reward, he said. (See ”Parents of Slain Man Refuse to Blame Entire Community.”)
The young man was found near the Fashion Palace store on Route 108 at 12:28 a.m. June 19 with multiple stab wounds to his body. He was pronounced dead at 1:10 a.m. at Myrah Keating Smith Community Health Center.
He and his mother, Jeanie Cockayne, of New Hope, Penn., had been on St. John since late May. Cockayne was waiting for work papers to begin a job at the Bitter End Yacht Club on Virgin Gorda, and his mother was looking for a house to buy.
McCall urged anyone with information to call 715-5506 or 911.
