Feb. 27, 2008 – Pistarckle Theater presents a dressmaking and fashion design course that has been created by Nayda Young. It will offer creative opportunities to transform design ideas into garments. This course will enable students to design and sew their own clothing line, create home décor pieces, sew their children's clothing and set the possibility for self-employment.
Students ages 9 through adults will be exposed to the basic skills of sketching, knowledge of pattern drafting, fabric and pattern selection, sewing machine use, cutting and sewing, and garment construction. There will be six two-hour lessons. The first two classes will be held from 3-5 p.m., on Wednesday, March 12, and from 10 a.m. to noon, on Saturday, March 15. All classes will be held at the theater in Tillett Gardens, according to a press release from Pistarckle Theater.
Young has been involved in the fashion industry for more than 35 years as a fashion designer and sewing instructor. Her expertise includes designing for celebrities, private clients and boutiques in California, Connecticut and the Virgin Islands. For several years she owned a boutique on Coki Beach, which carried her line of clothing.
No sewing experience is needed for this course, and there will be a fashion show of students work at the end. This project is jointly supported by a grant from the V.I. Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.
