Sept. 20, 2007 — Customers in and around Estate Thomas will see a brief interruption of electric service Thursday night when the Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority energizes an underground cable to St. Thomas’ new Long Bay Substation.
Starting at 10:30 p.m. and continuing until 5 a.m. Friday morning, electrical contractors will also be tying in a new distribution circuit to serve Estate Thomas and surrounding areas. The service interruption is expected to last about a half-hour between 11 p.m. and midnight on Feeder # 8B, which serves areas adjacent to the Farrelly Justice Complex, the Grand Hotel, and Lionel Roberts Stadium and on Feeder #9B which serves areas surrounding Estate Thomas, Barbel Plaza, the Lucinda Millin Home, and Wheatley Plaza.
According to Gregory Rhymer, System Planning Director, the project is almost complete and the Long Bay Substation will be put into operation in the coming weeks. This project's cost is $6.5 million dollars and has been funded by internally generated funds, bond proceeds, and a customer contribution from the developers of the Yacht Haven project. The new substation is expected to bring greater service reliability along one of the major economic corridors of St. Thomas.
Motorists are asked to observe all traffic directions eastward from Western Cemetery to Long Bay including Main Street, Veteran’s Drive and Beltjen Road, while the work is in progress.
