Sept. 14, 2007 — St. Croix experienced an island-wide power outage starting just before 4 p.m. Friday and lasting several hours.
The problem was not with a generator but with the power plants internal power-distribution system, said Water and Power Authority Spokeswoman Cassandra Dunn.
Our engineers say it was a fault on the station service distribution buss, she said. Its a bit involved, but essentially there was probably a short inside the system that feeds power inside the plant, powering the plant itself.
When the power distribution feeding station shut down, it caused a cascading failure throughout the system, Dunn said. Technicians isolated the fault and began bypassing it, lighting up each feeder one after another. By 8:10 p.m. power was back to most of the island, and around 9:30 all power was restored.
