Cardiac Care Center Ready to Open

October 23 — A new era in health care in the Caribbean will open Friday morning with the grand opening of the new Virgin Islands Cardiac Center at Juan Luis Hospital.
A by-invitation crowd will watch Gov. John deJongh Jr. , Delegate Donna Christensen, hospital administrators and community leaders open the 25,305-square-foot, $18.5 million center, according to hospital spokesman Rashidi Clenance.
The event will also include members of the Legislature, a color guard, entertainment and tours of the facility for the invited guests.
The new center will offer comprehensive cardiac services.
“It’s state of the art,” Clenance said. “All the equipment is top of the line. We’re trying to be the model institution for the Caribbean. We’re very proud of the aesthetics of the building and the contents of the building, and we’re most proud of the people in it, the people who work in it and run it.”
Clenance added that the hospital will sponsor a field day Saturday at D.C. Canegata Ballpark, and those attending will have an opportunity to contribute to the center there.
The event begins at 4 p.m. and will include a softball game between hospital staff and the JKC Communications, along with a fast-pitch game between local teams. There will be live music, refreshments, and attendees will be able to contribute to the center.
“We are the people’s hospital,” Clenance said. “After all the tension of the hurricane, we wanted to give the people something that’s fun.”
The Cardiac Care Center is connected to the Intensive Care Unit on the hospital's second floor. It will house two fully equipped catheterization labs, offices and a conference room.
